It is the end of day 3 and Ava has successfully been weaned off of the C-PAP but still has frequent apnea spells. Now that Ava is breathing pretty good on her own the next thing we acheive is her ability to keep her own body tempurature. This is something she is not able to do right now and she cannot come home unless she can keep herself warm. We also can't hold her yet because if we take her out of her isolette her body temperature will fall too low.
Ava also needs to learn how to eat and suck. She was intubated today and is being fed glucose water. This seems like such a small amount of nutrition but her intestines may not be fully developed enough to digest anything. She needs to learn to learn to suck so she can successfully breast/bottle feed. One method of practice is with her new pacifier which she seems to like!
Melvin was able to change Ava's diaper for the first time and as soon as that diaper came off, Ava finally pooped! This seems like such an odd thing to celebrate but it is a sign that her digestive system is functioning properly and her intestines are developed!
Ava also opened her eyes and looked at me today. She has my blue eyes and Mel's red hair!!!!
