Melvin held Ava during most of our visit today as she soundly slept on his shoulder. Nothing new to report on her health. We did get to give her a bath for the first time, however! It was a dry bath since she still has her umbillical cord but we were able to clean her from head to toe!
I was so excited to be able step in yet again and take over for the NICU nurses when it came to basic baby care. She is my daughter and I should be doing all of those things. I really crave those hands-on moments and absolutely cannot wait until we get to take Ava home so we can give her a real bath in her tub!
Ava is also still in the incubator because she continues to have trouble maintaining her body temp and she is still suffering from frequent apnea & bradycardia. She's eating well and they are continually feeding her larger amounts of breastmilk each time.
Later tonight when I come back for my second visit we are going to attempt to breastfeed. Ava may not be ready yet but the nurses still want us to try. Another problem we may have is that her mouth may be too small for a proper latch since she's so tiny! I'll spare the rest of the details but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well!
